Interview: Protagonist

Protagonist is a five-piece punk band from Boca Raton, Fla. who’s known for being one of the original 90s local rock bands. Formed in 1999, they’ve survived and triumphed over things like stolen equipment, broken down vans. They re-appeared on the scene in 2015 with “Jean Jackets in June”, a five song EP recorded with Florida based label, SmartPunk, who also included the band’s song “Hideaway” on their 2016 sampler.
Shortly after, South Florida pop punk powerhouse New Found Glory asked Protagonist to tour with them on their Florida Vacation tour, which came to Miami’s Churchill’s Pub on March 4. I had the chance to speak with vocalist Pete Marullo at Churchill’s, where we got in-depth on SmartPunk, music as a safe space, "Jean Jackets In June", South by Southwest and "protasms".
